My Role & Responsibilities
Facilitating rapid product discovery
In a fast-paced hackathon environment, clear direction is vital. I stepped in to facilitate the initial team workshops, ensuring we aligned on a single, strong concept before opening any design software.
Once the strategy was set, I owned the user experience and visual design, moving rapidly from paper sketches to a high-fidelity prototype.
-
Workshop Facilitation
Led the team through 'Crazy Eights' exercises and flipchart ideation to quickly zero in on the best product direction. -
UX/UI Design
Designed the complete mobile interface, focusing on clear navigation and rewarding visual feedback for the user's progress. -
Rapid Prototyping
Built a fully interactive prototype to test our assumptions and showcase the core gamification loop in action. -
Brand Creation
Developed the visual language, including the app's logo, color palette, and custom iconography.
The Challenge
Motivating movement beyond dry charts
Most step-tracking applications rely on raw data and simple graphs, which often fail to build long-term habits. Our goal was to design an experience that felt like an adventure rather than a daily chore.
The core challenge was time. We had exactly 48 hours to analyze competitors, define the value proposition, design the interface, and build an interactive prototype that proved the gamification concept worked.
-
Time Constraints
Executing end-to-end product design, from initial research to a clickable prototype, within a strict 2-day hackathon window. -
User Motivation
Designing a gamified loop that encouraged users to voluntarily increase the frequency and length of their daily walks. -
The Core Loop
Translating real-world physical steps into meaningful, easy-to-understand progress on a virtual travel map. -
Visual Identity
Creating an approachable, engaging brand identity, complete with logos and icons, from scratch.

Designing a rewarding journey
To make the app sticky, we focused on long-term goals broken down into daily achievements. Here is how we structured the gamified experience.
Aligning the team fast
With only 48 hours available, we couldn't afford miscommunication. I facilitated a quick competitor analysis to see how existing apps rewarded walking.
Using 'Crazy Eights' methodology on flipcharts, we generated dozens of ideas and unanimously decided to focus on the 'virtual travel' concept, setting the stage for rapid digital execution.
Walking to Paris
The core mechanic was simple but powerful: choose a dream destination, like Paris, and set a timeframe, like 20 days.
Instead of just seeing '10,000 steps', the user sees their avatar moving across a map, unlocking milestones and virtual postcards. This narrative approach transforms mundane neighborhood walks into an exciting global journey.
Bringing the idea to life
Static screens don't sell interaction. To truly validate our concept during the hackathon pitch, I built an interactive prototype.
This allowed users to click through the onboarding process, select a destination, and experience the dopamine hit of logging steps and seeing their virtual location update.
Hackathon Results
From flipchart to functional prototype in 48 hours.
By maintaining strict focus and utilizing rapid ideation techniques, we successfully delivered a cohesive, engaging mobile app concept within the weekend deadline.
Rapid Delivery
Designed and prototyped a complete application concept within a tight 48-hour window.
Validated Concept
Proved that framing physical activity as a narrative journey increases perceived user motivation.
Cohesive Brand
Delivered a complete visual identity alongside the functional UX, elevating the final pitch.
Team Alignment
Successfully guided a multidisciplinary team from ambiguous ideas to a unified product vision.
Focus is the ultimate feature
Hackathons are the ultimate test of prioritizing what truly matters.
This project reinforced the value of quick, low-fidelity workshops before diving into pixels. By aligning on the 'virtual travel' narrative early, we avoided feature creep and spent our time polishing the core loop.
It proved that you don't need months to build a compelling user experience—you just need a clear goal, a motivated team, and a solid design process.
